American Head Charge Back From the Dead With New EP

AHC Shoot EP

I dunno what popular opinion is at this point regarding American Head Charge’s significance, but who gives a shit? I never made any promises to provide relevant/trending news. War of Art was an absolute BEAST of a violent-motherfucker that still holds up. Due to its timing coinciding with some of the more formative years of my adolescence, the band will always hold a special place in my diamond encrusted heart.

Actually, my little brother was first to stumble onto the band and eventually infected my brain with it, despite early resistance. Who wants to share bands with their shithead little brother, amirite? Nevertheless, once my butthurt subsided, the record led to some quality BRO-bonding and an unmeasurable number of trips to school, headbanging our fucking dicks off. Maximum SWAG is achieved through rolling into the high school parking lot right when the breakdown from “All Wrapped Up” busts in (I suppose “the breakdown” could be considered the entire fucking song, let’s not split hairs). Brain damage acquired. Panties flying everywhere.

I also remember being highly disturbed by this video at the time. I may be a metal fan, but I never got into the gore/horror shit. Regardless, the clip is incredibly legit.

Let’s cut the nostalgia and get to the actual news. It’s been 8 years since these doods’ last true full-length, and how I have missed the wonderful tones of Captain Cameron Heacock. Now the BROs are back with a new EP “Shoot” and a balls-out summer tour, and much to my chagrin, the EP is pretty solid! It would be easy to marginalize their return to the scene as a last-ditch effort to grab a few dollars, but its been a long and chaotic road back for Cameron, Chad and the boys, and it’s clear the struggle helped to redefine them as individuals and as a band. Plus, who makes money in the music business these days? Whether or not their real issues have been resolved is doubtful, but I commend them for picking up the pieces and breathing new life into an entity we all assumed had passed its expiration date.

“Shoot” is certainly a step away from AHC’s previous shizz, offering up a far more sophisticated sound while still lingering in the realm of industrial metal, and includes a fairly bitchin’ cover of Patti Smith‘s “Rock n Roll Nigger“. I’m sure the fans from way-back will be put-off by the more subdued pace and organic flow derived from their maturation, but give it a few spins. It might surprise you.
